A History of the League****

Our league has a long history of change and innovation.  In a conversation with Rita Kennedy, she estimated it began in the early 90s. At that time, it was the Monday Senior Ladies Scramble. I didn’t play in the league when it was a Scramble, but I remember hearing that if you wanted to win, you’d better play on Marion Plume’s team.

The league then became the Monday Ladies League (minus the Scramble part) because they played a variety of games each week. I did play then and I remember fondly the surprisingly large payouts and an elaborate year-end banquet. But there were also problems with that format. Handicaps were required for some games, slow play was an issue, there was confusion at times with game instructions, and at times general chaos when setting up the foursomes using the random drawing of cards. Problems even arose with the elaborate end-of-year dinner banquet, as not everyone was able to enjoy a set dinner or its cost.

Our Wednesday Ladies Leage is the continuation of these two formats.

In 2015 the league organisers retired and in 2016 I offered to run a Quota Points format. The use of the quota point game, I believed solved many previous problems.  Quota points

  • allows for is own handicapping,
  • it is a set game that didn’t change week to week
  • a game which allows players to play with a variety of people and skill levels while remaining competitive because you are effectively playing against yourself.

In the first year of Quota Points we continued to play on a Monday but with holidays, packages and tournaments we quickly switched to Wednesday play.  7 games that year were scheduled for the Lake course.  We were not happy about that.

For the first three years we had a breakfast closing with a fun game afterwards.  That changed in 2019 to a lunch closing.  All of our closings have been off the menu, solving the problem of organizing a set-menu banquet.

In 2017, the Playtexcup trophies were introduced as a way to make September play more interesting and rewarding (for some).  We also started taking Year End photos.

The COVID years of 2020 / 21 brought more innovation to the league with the development of the website and the virtual collection of money.  The website was a valuable addition to the league as it stored information in one place and the information was available to anyone 24/7.

In 2022 and 2023, a division of labour was introduced with Sandra taking on the role of making up the groupings, Marianne doing special games, and Cathy developing a recruitment poster.

In 2023, our Big Cup Champion Cindy Graham tragically passed away, and the Enthusiast Trophy was created to remember the dedication and joy she brought to our golf league.

In 2025, we broke the 300 mark in rounds played and 900 dollar mark in money collected.

This year in 2026, innovation and change continue as Marilyn McQueen will be taking on the scoring and Marlene Trimble will be taking on the groupings.

We wish them well and may this league, in any form that it takes, continue for many years to come.
