The Pike Lake Wednesday Ladies Golf League began using a Quota Point Format in 2016. Each hole played allows you the opportunity to accumulate points. The object of the game is to achieve your personal points quota each Wednesday and then some. The values are as follows:
- an eagle is worth 5 points,
- a birdie is worth 3 points,
- a par is worth 2 points,
- a bogey is worth 1 point,
- a double bogey is worth ½ point,
- a triple bogey or more is 0
Your personal points quota is established on entry to the league. After each game, the points achieved by each player is compared to their target quota and that value is compared across the players for that day.
Individual points quotas are adjusted each week. If more points were accumulated than your quota then for the following game your quota will be higher. If fewer points were accumulated than your quota then for the following game your quota will be less. A two-point spread results in a one-point change in quota up or down to a maximum of a 3 point change.
The advantages of using a quota points game are many,
- It is not necessary for players to have or to maintain a handicap to play.
- It provides a level playing field for all players – as you are effectively playing against yourself.
- All level of golfer can play and be competitive.
- It provides a challenge for everyone and rewards golfers that improve their game.
- It encourages faster play, by allowing players the opportunity to pick up at triple bogey.
The points game allows anyone the opportunity to pick up their ball at triple-bogey because no points are assigned at three above par. If you do play to a handicap and are used to picking up your ball at your maximum you must still play to triple bogey for the sake of the points game but for handicap purposes, you must also know when you have achieved your handicap maximum on any given hole, as determined by the World Handicap System. For more information on the World Handicap System, see the pro shop staff. Again, it is not necessary for you to maintain a handicap to play the quota points game.
Finally, to the best of our ability, we follow the rules of golf as outlined by Golf Canada https://www.golfcanada.ca/rules-of-golf/. The exception is the use of the 5th Hole Drop Zone. The league members have agreed that if your second shot unintentionally goes into the hazard directly in front of the green or into the wooded area to the right of the cart path you may go to the drop zone with a one-stroke penalty. It is understood that this is our league’s rule and doesn’t apply to any regular games outside our league. The purpose of this rule is to improve the pace of play and minimized frustration.
